SciBAC es un congreso dedicado a la Biotecnología en su totalidad, pero como es imposible abarcarla por completo, nos hemos decidido por 6 lineas temáticas que abarcan una parte bastante importante.Para cada una de ellas habrá dos ponentes invitados, líderes en sus respectivos campos,

Línea 1: Trending topics in Food Biotechnology & Alcohol Production

Food processing and alcohol production have always been at the core of Biotechnology. From the discovery of wine-making and and the process for making bread and beer, to the vast-sized industries of today. That’s why it has its spot in SciBAC too.

In the last decade, new techniques have been developed to help doctors and researchers in their fight against diseases or ailments. Not only that, but biomaterials and nanotechnology are showing a lot of promise in industrial fields. This is their place in SciBAC.

Elisabeth Engel

Biomaterials, tissue engineering and nanotechnology
Licenciada en Biología y Doctora por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (2003), Elisabeth Engel realizó su post-doc en el Departamento de Ciencia de Materiales de la Universidad Politécnica de Cataluña (UPC). En 2008 pasó a ser investigadora senior en el Instituto de Bioingeniería de Cataluña (IBEC) donde se dedica a ampliar las aplicaciones de biomateriales en medicina regenerativa a otros tejidos como el nervioso, el vascular o la piel.

Bioinformatics, computational biology and omics have revolutionized every field in biology and Biotechnology, and are regarded as a key tool in every other field of Biotechnology, and a very active field by themselves.

Toni Gabaldón

Omics and computational biology
Toni Gabaldón se formó como Bioquímico y Biólogo Molecular en las Universidades de Valencia y Mainz (Alemania). En el año 2008, Toni Gabaldón estableció su propio grupo de investigación en el Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG) en Barcelona, centrado en el uso de la genómica comparativa y la filogenómica para estudiar el origen, evolución y función de organismos complejos. En la actualidad también es profesor de Bioinformática y Evolución Molecular en la Universidad Pompeu Fabra.

Bad PR and controversy aside, almost every scientist in the field can attest that Green Biotechnology is safe. It is also growing, at incredible rates. And making us able to increase agricultural yield on a scale never seen before. Green Biotechnology is one of the keys of a sustainable future, and as such deserves its own spot in SciBAC
